Popochat HOWTO
Intro
This is a simple guide on how to connect to Popochat via an IRC-client. I have decided to show how it's done with mIRC, since it's hands down the most common client.
Getting started
First off, download the latest version of mIRC. This is done at www.mirc.com. Click the "Download mIRC" link, select a location close to you and download the file. Run the installer and install to a directory of your choice, standard options works just fine. Finish the installer. Start mIRC.
How to connect
Startup
When you first start mIRC, you're greeted by a splash with the creators photo and some text about the program. Click continue. The splash will disappear and you will see this small window instead.
Enter your information
This is where we enter information like nickname and such.
The fields:
- Full name: enter your name if you want to. Other users will be able to look this up, so if you're worried about safety write something else, like "Popomundoplayer".
- Email address: same procedure here basically. It doesn't need to be a valid email address, it will just be used as part of the information the server needs on you. It's what you enter before the @ that matters.
- Nickname: your name in the chat. This should be your full poponame. Spaces are not available, so in my case it's StevenClark.
- Alternative: if your nickname is already in use, this will be used instead. Enter something similar as above.
Add the server
Now it's time to add information about the server. Click the little yellow and red button next to "Connect to server". You will now see this.
Click "Add".
Enter the following information
- Description: Popomundo
- IRC Server: chat.popomundo.com
- Port(s): 7000
- Group: Popomundo
- Password: leave this blank
Click "Add"
You're back at this screen. Now click "Connect to server". This will cause mIRC to start connecting to the Popomundo IRC-server. Look below for possible causes if it doesn't work.
Once you are connected this window will appear.
Type "global" in the topmost field, and click "Join"
Now what?
Congratulations. You are popochatting! Please follow the rules!
With an IRC-client you have some possibilities that javachat users don't have. For example you can perform "Actions". This is done by typing "/me does something". This will present as * StevenClark does something.
You can also change your nickname, for example if you are going to be away from the computer for a while. To change my name from StevenClark to StevenClark[A] I simply type /nick StevenClark[A].
Private messaging is also more refined. To send a private message to someone, doubleclick on the persons nickname in the list to the right. This will give you a new window where you can speak directly to this person
Troubleshooting
If you're unable to connect to the server, first make sure you entered everything correctly. Try to read the error message, and see if there is any help. Some internet providers, companies and schools etc. block IRC-traffic. If this is the case, you need to talk with your network administrator.
